Replant the Prairie

Bring Texas wildlife home

IMG_2796.jpeg

Our Mission

Vast grasslands painted with swaths of vibrant wildflowers once dominated the land where the city of Austin, Texas now stands. This grassland ecosystem gave life to millions of plants, invertebrates, mammals, and even large apex predators. Today, less than 1% of the original habitat remains.

There are more than 5,000 plant species native to Texas, over 400 of which are threatened by current development practices. These plants are home to millions of bugs, birds, and mammals - the wildlife we have lost nearly 70% of since the 1990s. If we lose the rest of the native Texas prairie lands, we will pass the point of no return.

You can help preserve a piece of the prairie at home. The mission of Replant The Prairie is to empower all Travis County residents to support natural ecosystems by growing native plants at home and in their communities. Count on us for resources, information, and local events where you can get involved in preservation efforts!

Ways to Get Involved

You don't always have to get your hands dirty to support wildlife. Consider sponsoring an AISD teaching garden, donating to the Native Plant Society, or volunteering as a greeter for the LBJ Wildflower Center.
